(From 'The Neanderthal Question' p. 7-8:)

"The most recent period of geological time is called the Pleistocene epoch and covers the last two to three million years. Because this period has coincided with the latest Great Ice Age, it is sometimes called the Glacial epoch. Yet the Great Ice Age had in fact been signalling its coming throughout the previous seventy million years, and most markedly in the two epochs immediately preceding the Pleistocene. These were the Miocene epoch, which began some twenty million years ago, and the Pliocene, which commenced approximately ten million years later".

"The slow drop in average world temperatures during the whole era, and their rather rapid drop in the last two epochs, produced extensive, though at first not sudden, changes in both natural vegetation and rainfall. As a result, and increasingly, all organic life, both animal and vegetable alike, was faced with the command 'get on - or get out'. That is, 'evolve or perish'. An organism had in all three choices. It could evolve different capacities to meet the altered conditions in which it found itself. It could migrate (in principle south-wards) to new areas, where the conditions under which it had originally evolved were more or less duplicated. Or it could die".

"Man did all three of these things."

Let's jump on to page 9 of 'The Neanderthal Question', please try to sample the enormous understanding potential in our writer's injected, incidentally, when read by an awesome intellectual capacity such as Brian Aldiss, Robert Temple & Collin Wilson -: our deepest-layer psychologist Gooch springing the basic-basic* facts of not just 'survival of the fittest' but of any racial-ethnic- xenophobia & genocide /'specicide' - here goes - as good as Gooch goes (and thas pretty good):

"In the Miocene especially we face a bewildering assortment of man-like species. Even so, the many we have so far discovered must be considered only as a sample of the total possible. ...
"Some of these creatures, as well as others yet undiscovered, were not only our own ancestors, but those of the gorilla, chimpanzee, orang-utan and gibbon also. Those 'modern' apes just named are, incidentally, themselves examples of backward flowing evolution. For their ancestors were more manlike than they themselves are today. All seem to have entered, or been driven into, evolutionary blind alleyes. It is possible, even probable, that man himself drove them there. He may selectively have killed any and all apes who too closely physically and psychologically, threatened his own superior status."

But then this cunning healer's holistic therapeutic-approach has had some years of hard labour: Now sample how cleverly he 'undertook' the understanding starting this bulk of text off in this resuming mode (The Neanderthal Question p. 9):
"Perhaps I can anticipate later discussion by proposing, as already in my earlier books, that the prominent brow ridges of Rhodesian man and of all Neanderthaloids - occasionally forming a solid shelf, but more often divided by a dip above the nose into two jutting prominences - are the actual, physical model of the horns of the Christian devil".

So some of the bricks to the secret knowledge on magnetite/red ochre in the early stages of Gooch's research ('The Secret Life of Humans'  1981 p 30f) (but read 'Cities of Dreams')

"The important new evidence presented here concerns red ochre (red oxide of iron), also known as haematite, a term derived from the Greek work of blood. Chemically it is Fe2O3, and is frequently a product of the weathering of magnetite, Fe3O4. In other words, when magnetite is exposed to atmosphere at the surface, it turns into haematite". ...

"Magnetite, as it happens, is highly magnetic. It is the ancient lodestone (i.e. the leading stone). Thanks to a an archaeological discovery in 1967 we now know that the Olmecs of Central America had invented the compass at least one thousand years before the Chinese ... The Olmec method was to make a sliver or  bar of polished magnetite (lodestone)  and place it on a piece of wood or cork floating in a bowl of water. The bar then veered to point to magnetic north. As further proof, we know that Olmec ceremonial centres were laid out to point a few degrees west of true north – i.e. to magnetic north".

"Also remarkable in this connection is a large Olmec stone head of a turtle carved in basalt,  and rich in naturally magnetized iron. The head is shaped in such a way that the lines of magnetic force run to a point at the snout".

"Only since 1975 have we in the modern west come to realize that many, and perhaps all, animals and plants sense and respond to the earths magnetic field. The variously navigate by it, telle the time of day by it, and the season by it. They do this by means of magnetite. Strings of magnetite have been found i tiny sea bacteria, and a cluster of magnetite in the head of the homing pigeon. Both of these organisms use the earth’s magnetic field to determine their position. Will we now also find such clusters in the snout of the turtle, one of the great navigators of this planet?"

Now, with all Mr. Stan Gooch has written on labyrinths try this Basic-Basic-Mazick, it might work: undefined term means find out for yourself to get out:
Thanks to LRH (not for the first time, pal!)

basic: This Scientology-Dianetics term means: '1. The first incident (engram, lock, overt act) on any chain. 2. The first experience recorded in mental image pictures of that type of pain, sensation, discomfort, etc. Every chain has its basic. It is a peculiarity and a fact that when one gets down to the basic on a chain, (a) it erases and (b) the whole chain vanishes for good. Basic is simply earliest.' Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 38 Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8

basic-basic: This Scientology-Dianetics term '... means the most basic basic of all basics and results in clearing. ... 2: the first engram on the whole time track. definition 3: any similar circumstance repetitive through a person's whole track has a first time it occurred and that first time that it occurred we call basic-basic.' Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 39 Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8

chain: 1. a series of recordings of similar experiences. A chain has engrams, secondaries and locks. 2. incidents of similar nature strung out in time. 3. a series of incidents of similar nature or similar subject matter. Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 64. Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8

engram 1: 1. a mental image picture which is a recording of a time of physical pain and unconsciousness. It must by definition have impact or injury as part of its content. (ed. remark: a basic sciontologieze term with a 1 page+ definition in): Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 41-42 Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8 see underneath:

engram 2 & 3: 2. a specialized kind of facsimile. This differs from other mental pictures because it contains, as part of its content, unconsciousness and physical pain. 3. a complete recording, down to the last accurate detail, of every perception present in a moment of partial or full unconsciousness. Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 41. Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8

facsimile: 1. any mental picture, that is unknowingly created and part of the time track is a facsimile, whether an engram, secondary, lock or pleasure moment. ... 5. a full facsimile is a sort of three-dimensional color picture with sound and smell and other perceptions plus the conclusions or speculations of the individual. 6. a simple word meaning a picture of a thing, a copy of a thing, not the thing itself. ... Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 153f. Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8

key-in: v1. the action of recording a lock on a secondary or engram. - n 1. the first time an engram is restimulated is called a key-in. A key-in is merely a special kind of lock, the first lock on a particular engram. 2. a moment when the environment around the awake but fatigued or distressed individual is itself similar to the dormant engram. At that moment the engram becomes active. It is keyed-in and can thereafter be dramatized.

lock: 1. an analytical moment in which the perceptics of the engram are approximated, thus restimulating the engram or bringing it into action, the present time perceptics being erroneously interpreted by the reactive mind to mean that the same condition which produced physical pain once before is now again at hand. Locks contain mainly perceptics; no physical pain and very little misemotion. 2. a situation of mental anguish. It depends for its force on the engram to which it is appended. The lock is more or less known to the analyzer. It's a moment of severe restimulation of an engram. 3. Those parts of the time track which contain moments the PC associates with key-ins. 4. Conscious level experiences which sort of stick and the individual doesn't quite know why. 5. Mental image pictures of non-painful but disturbing experiences the person has experienced. They depend for their force on secondaries and engrams. Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 234f. Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8

overt act: 1. an overt act is not just injuring someone or something; an overt act is an act of omission or commission which does the least good for the least number of dynamics or the most harm to the greatest number of dynamics. 2. An intentionally committed harmful act committed in an effort to resolve a problem. 3. that thing which you do which you aren't willing to have happen to you. Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 288. Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8

Scientology undefined term but don't everyone have a meaning (surely based on research?) or see Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard. Copenhagen 1983 e.v. or later ISBN 87-7336-117-8

secondaries - vide secondary see also in Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard. Copenhagen 1983 e.v. or later ISBN 87-7336-117-8

secondary 1. a mental image picture of a moment of severe and chocking loss or threat of loss which contains misemotion such as anger, fear, grief, apathy or 'deathfulness.' It is a mental image recording of a time of severe mental stress. It may contain unconsciousness. Called a secondary because it itself depends upon an earlier engram with similar data but real pain, ect. ... 5. a moment of misemotion where loss is threatened or accomplished. Secondaries contain only misemotion and communication and reality enforcements and breaks. Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 375ff. Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8

time-track: 1. the consecutive record of mental image pictures which accumulates through the pre clear's life and  lives. It is very exactly dated. 2. the time span  of the individual ... on which lies the sequence of events of his total existence. 3. the endless record, complete with fifty-two perceptions of the PC's past. The time-track is a very accurate record of the PC's past, very accurately timed, very obedient to the auditor. If motion picture film were 3D, had fifty-two perceptions and could fully react upon the observer, the time track could be called a motion picture film. It is a least 350,000,000,000,000 years long, probably much longer, with a scene about every 1/25 of a second. 4. consists of all the consecutive moments of "now" from the earliest moment of life of the organism to present time. Actually, the track is a multiple bundle of perceptics; and it might be said that there is a time track for each perceptic, all tracks running simultaneously. The track might also be considered as a system of filing recordings made of the environment and the organism, filed according to time received. All the perceptions of the environment and the organism during the entire lifetime, up to now, or present time, are recorded, faintly or deeply, upon the time track. Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 439f Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8

whole-track: the whole track is the moment to moment record of a person's existence in this universe in picture and impression form. Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary by L.Ron Hubbard p. 468. Copenhagen 1983 e.v. ISBN 87-7336-117-8
